When you have a family but you also have a job, getting the right balance and keeping yourself and everybody else happy can be a very tricky thing to ask. However, there are certain things you can do to make it easier for everyone to spend time with you, and you’ll be happier spending time with the people close to you.
- Change your working hours
Rather than finishing at the end of the day, start a couple of hours earlier and then finish a couple of hours earlier. This isn’t always possible and will require a conversation with your boss about the flexibility of working hours, but it would allow you to finish earlier to pick your children up from school, for example.
- Put work to one side in the evenings
When you finish work at the end of the day, make a vow to yourself to put work to one side and concentrate on your time and spending some time with your family. It’s easy to get pulled into looking at work even when you’re not in the office, so make a conscious decision to leave it for the night.
- Make the most of your days off
Be sensible about the way you use your allocated days off, and use them when you know lots of family members are going to be available too. You might want to take time off during school breaks, for example, so that you can maximise the time you spend with your children.
- Check out any work from home options
Ask your manager about the possibility of working from home on some of the days you are working. If you have an office-based job and you can do all the same things from the comfort of your home, you might be allowed to work one day per month from home. This will allow you to spend a little bit of extra time with your partner and children.
- Spend your free time with family
You will need some alone time sometimes, but in the evenings, eat dinner with your family in order to catch up on the day’s events. At the weekends, if you have spare time, plan a day trip or go away for a night.
- Relax first so you don’t stress out
Rather than stressing out during the time that you spend with your family, take some time for yourself to relax and de-stress before you spend time with them.
