There are not many things that are certain in life, but learning to deal with the idea of uncertainty in life can be difficult. If you worry easily about events and situations, you might find it difficult to cope when something isn’t 100% certain. Here are some ways you can learn to accept uncertainty throughout life, no matter what situation you are faced with.
Be ready for different outcomes
If you always expect just one outcome and then it turns out differently, you’ll start to worry about what went wrong and what you could have done differently. Being prepared for various outcomes will ensure that you don’t feel too disappointed if it’s not the outcome you wanted, and it will also allow you to become used to the idea that nothing is certain and there could potentially be more than one outcome or solution.
Make plans and act
If you’re worried about something, sit down and think about how you can solve the problem. Rather than expecting things to work out a certain way, start to plan events and do things to help the situation work out the way you want it to. Without actions, it’s difficult to get the outcome that you want. To-do lists, meetings with other people who are involved, and workshops or tutorials are all great ways to plan for certain situations.
Become more confident
Give yourself new challenges and work hard to overcome them. Sometimes you’ll fail, but other times you’ll succeed, and you’ll feel very confident about yourself when you do. Rather than worrying about not being able to adapt to a situation that is different from the one you wanted or expected, see it as a new challenge that you can face. When you overcome it successfully, you’ll be ready for the next time and you’ll be even more confidence about your own abilities to cope.
Practice mindfulness and meditation
Set aside some time each day for this practice, as it will help you to not only become more aware of yourself and your surroundings, but also get used to the different scenarios which could play out. Rather than thinking about the situations during work hours, on your commute to work or back home or when you’re hanging out with friends and family, you can go through it in your mind during the time that you have set aside to do so. Accepting uncertainly is an important part of life, and this will help you to achieve that.
